A finalist’s reflection

Sitting here writing my dissertation, the final piece of coursework I will hand in during my time at university, I can’t help but reminisce over the past three years I’ve spent at Warwick. To say it’s been a rollercoaster would be an understatement; whilst I’ve definitely made some of my best memories I have also experienced such disillusion with the system that at times I wondered what even was the point in it all (this wasn’t helped by my 6.5 contact hours in final year, where all I felt like…

Appreciating Arts degrees: yes, they are important!

As an arts student, I have frequently heard the false assumptions and ill-informed opinions a lot (in fact, too many!) people have, over what this kind of degree entails. ‘You’ll never get a graduate job with that degree, certainly not one with a decent starting salary!’, ‘8 contact hours?! Do you actually do any work?’ and ‘Essays! Pfttt, I could write an essay in my sleep and do well, the assignments we have in Maths are on a completely different level to be honest’ are all comments I’ve heard since…

Don’t sweat the small stuff: your second year house doesn’t have to be perfect

Black tepid water swirls around my ankles, spiders flee before me and a dark gloom hangs over the place. Have I accidentally fallen into the Chamber of Secrets? No, I’m trying to make myself a piece of toast and a brew in our new student accommodation. As a second year, I was beyond excited to come back to student life after the longest summer ever. When I moved into our house in Leamington, so many things started to go wrong. We discovered a spider infestation in the bathroom, one of…

Things I’ve learnt so far as a Warwick student

Before my first year at university, I’d been lead to believe that Warwick is an edgy/urban-looking version of Oxbridge. A year later, I’m still unable to decide whether my assumptions were correct, but there are a few things that I found quite surprising. Firstly, the uni isn’t actually in Warwick, so at some point you’ll have to get the bus. If you want to get to somewhere on time you should probably set off about 2 hours early because you can’t rely on the buses here at all. Also, unless…

#FreshersReflection: “Looking back on Freshers two years ago, I realise just how little I knew at the time”

Looking back on Freshers two years ago, I realise just how little I knew at the time. University seemed like this magical place where I would somehow grow up, complete my degree, make some great friends and partake in a variety of opportunities. And while that’s all true, there are definitely some things I definitely got wrong. Before I first stepped foot in Warwick, I was under the illusion that a lot of the people there would be into the same things. They’d be from a similar background, listen to…

Freshers: what they didn’t tell us

This is the first post relating to what we’ve been talking about on our radio show (if anyone wants to have a listen, you can find it here). As Jamie and I are both Freshers, we thought that it only made sense to kick it all off with talking about our experiences of University so far here at Warwick. On Yik Yak, this seems to be a popular topic and people tend to either express their disappointment or elation about their time here so far. I’d definitely say that uni…
